Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.
The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up
around Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.
Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity that works to provide support and assistance to people in need.
Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.
Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags
of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.
Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes
from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.
Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers, and kitchen knives from previous pop-up
shops.
There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November,
and another in Boronia which will remain open until Christmas – or until
stock runs out.

A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.
The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for

Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up locations online.
‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.
‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I’m obsessed with it,’
another wrote.
‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a woman added.
For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered
a ‘hidden gem’ discount retailer where you can find designer buys from
brands like Fendi, Dior, and Aje for affordable prices.
TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland
and South Australia – is the answer to buying new clothes and
shoes on a budget.

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a gold mine of clothing lines

earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,’ Beth told FEMAIL.

Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up
because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael
DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment,
and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due
to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled
rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them,
this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged
in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

negative reactions to Joker: Folie à Deux, with the singer’s team now keen to quickly push out
other projects to help distract from the furore over
the film, insiders claim.
Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic
box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.
Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her turn as
Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker –
a role that won him the best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake
of the standing ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.
‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the
response it received from critics before it premiered,’ a
source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want
to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film
was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.
‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s
next and final film. Nobody knows what that is going to be,
but she wants to audition.
‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented,
it is a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians
are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the
two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia
at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the
argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of
the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how
US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these
receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime
minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally
Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including
the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced
in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200,
which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major

The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the
film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box
office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner
Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or
“rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is
reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release,
included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to
earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has
grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two
weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days
of release.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being

during the making of the film, with DC bosses James
Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s
LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150
[million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the
film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel,
while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC
and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and
Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC
two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all
due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director
would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per
cent less.

‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to

A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported
the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades, was
the perfect place to unveil Joker five years
ago; and last month, at the venerable film festival there,
it was followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title
role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love
interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful
performance.
We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that
she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.
This film is audaciously different in style from the original,
not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the same.
Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane
enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by
Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for
jokes.

Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable
fellow behind it? Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps being billed as a musical.
It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that
make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and
Emma Stone in La La Land (2016).
Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band Wagon that Lee,
who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets
fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape,
yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative
is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel
doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film
about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such
as Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975),
but not too far off.
– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised
version of New York City. The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly
written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner
struggling with life.
In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan),
an aspiring actor, that’s apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos
seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.
There are obvious echoes of The Elephant
Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie star
‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into
her own younger self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path
has presented itself’. In other words, medical science has found a way
to reverse his condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive
middle-aged man.
But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is
that Edward, despite his radical change in appearance, is still the same
person underneath that he always was.
In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic
neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright.
Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has written about their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.
I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who
he actually is. This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the same
condition Edward once had, but popular, witty,
confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who
really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called
neurofibromatosis).
Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s under the skin.

The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs
rain down night after night.
Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum whose son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing.
It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller
— in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.
I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers
whose work on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’ baby,
Louise Brown, in 1978.

It is directed by Ben Taylor, best-known for his TV work on shows such as Sex Education and

A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too. One
of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was
a film about Mary Quant. This time she turns to another
fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature called Twiggy.
And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’
look at the star’s life and career. It’s been made by
his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency
and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering
Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against
proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look
set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who
makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
– and the extent to which they can use their wealth
at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing
the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only
find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result
in much greater transparency and far less big
money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with
the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning
shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a
rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening
is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need
to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be
capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the
corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major
parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and
is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide.
Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much
on this issue.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that
will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the
crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes
before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally
in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal
to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical
opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and
reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily
on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat
Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe
Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly
will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a
ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and,
while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by
several Republican-controlled states amount to
“a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse,
has worked in several states where abortion is
banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to
young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald
Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a
20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions,
he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that
have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and
prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally
— powers normally reserved to the border
police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely
to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said
Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect
abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the
tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a
Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent
toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the
partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”
Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that
the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a
$90million limit on what any party can spend at an election –
actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the
first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will
be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need
to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what
to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s
proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency
measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by
the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the
major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal
of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will
begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.
Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.
The cheapest apartment on offer is expected
to be an eye-watering £35million – around 70
times the average cost of a house in the capital.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass
London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One
Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.
Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more than 600 prospective
buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have
expressed an interest in making a purchase at the scheme.
There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the
property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses
with up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.
The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the most
modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods.
The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq ft – will be close to
£70million.

Details of pricing at John Caudwell’s spectacular Mayfair development has now been revealed and only those with

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value of around £500,000, and 130 times the national
average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey
for November.
The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming
pool as well as a car park.
The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure
and superstructure.
Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily surpass
London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended the
topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of the construction team.
The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at roof level, being put into place on the top of the nine-storey main apartment building.
No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will
feature a ceiling with hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a
double height ceiling and 18ft high French windows overlooking
the garden.
There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces
of cut glass, a library and a garden gallery, with seating areas opening directly
onto the central courtyard garden.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was
little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth
straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald
Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling
too much. “We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song,
Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at
7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit
on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic
recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning,
managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference,
as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic
goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally
for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions,
likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year
treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against
the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to
move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT 03:

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market,
citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating
environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021,
said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of
several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for
the year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated
tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices,
as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the
country.
Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party,

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop
film, a new report has claimed.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and
was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics and
failed to ignite at the box office.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC
fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of
the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy
in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic
score of 32%

the end of the Joker sequel. while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past
successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca
and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect
to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery
merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director
would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
20 per cent less.
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and
‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but
it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood
Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which
had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019
film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the
lowest score for a comic book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also
received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during
the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around
$70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters –
and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global
box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and
audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the
76th Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the
film garnered an additional Academy Award
for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga
worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to
have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw
claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’
